Τα φετινά MTV Video Music Awards ήταν πολύ διαφορετικά από άλλες χρονιές. Η απονομή μουσικών βραβείων - με παρουσιάστρια φέτος την Keke Palmer - έλαβαν χώρα σε ένα ασφαλή υπαίθριους χώρους στη Νέα Υόρκη, χωρίς μεγάλο κοινό αλλά με αρκετές λαμπερές παρουσίες που τραγούδησαν σε μαγνητοσκοπημένα βίντεο και διάφορα red carpet events έλαβαν χώρα πριν την απονομή. Εξακολουθεί όμως να είναι ένα από τα πρώτα μεγάλα events που λαμβάνουν χώρα ζωντανά, και όχι ψηφιακά, μετά την έξαρση του Covid-19
Καλλιτέχνες όπως η Lady Gaga, η Ariana Grande, ο The Weeknd, o Maluma, οι BTS κ.ά. έντυσαν μουσικά τη βραδιά ενώ η Gaga σάρωσε στα βραβεία, λαμβάνοντας επίσης και το τιμητικό Tricon Award (που μέχρι πέρσι ήταν γνωστό ως Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award).
